This Restroom Door Sign with the Active Handicap Symbol is most popularly used in the state of New York. The original handicap symbol used in older restroom signage has been in existence for over 45 years and authorities across the U.S. thought that the original ISA wheelchair symbol used no longer represented people with disabilities. Looking for something more engaging and noticeable from the older wheelchair icon, it was time for a fresh design that depicts an active lifestyle rather than an inactive one. Even though this new style of sign is growing in use across the United States, you should always double check with your local CASp inspector to see if the active wheelchair pictogram is required for your building.
Note: Restroom Door signs should not have Braille. To meet ADA regulations, use a Restroom Wall sign with Braille in tandem with this Door sign. Both signs are mounted 60-inches from the floor to the center of the sign.
ADA Compliant Restroom Braille Sign Mounting Location and Height: Where permanent identification signs are provided for rooms and spaces, signs shall be installed on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door. Where there is no wall space on the latch side, including at double leaf doors, signs shall be placed on the nearest adjacent wall, preferably on the Right. Mounting height shall be 60 inches above the finish floor to the centerline of the sign. Mounting location shall be determined so that a person may approach within 3 inches of signage without encountering protruding objects or standing within the Swing of a door.
